Prince William Takes to the Waters: A Day of Dragon Boating in Singapore
Imagine paddling alongside a British royal! That’s exactly what 19 lucky paddlers experienced when Prince William joined the British Dragons Boat Racing Team for a training session at Marina Reservoir on November 6. Dressed casually in a white polo tee and a black cap, the Prince jumped right into the action, paddling with enthusiasm in the middle of the boat.
A Competitive Spirit on the Water
His team didn’t just paddle for fun; they raced against another boat, led by British High Commissioner Kara Owen. To everyone’s delight, Prince William’s team emerged victorious! After the race, the paddlers praised him for his natural talent, noting how he “didn’t miss a stroke.” The Prince humbly credited his success to following the captain’s lead, saying, “I was just following the key man in front of me.”
Crew members shared that the Prince was fully engaged, even declaring, “Seriously guys, I want to win this.” It’s clear that he brought his competitive spirit to the waters of Singapore!
A Royal Passion for Sports
This wasn’t Prince William’s first dragon boating experience. He mentioned having paddled before during his school days and while in Canada. His enthusiasm for sports was evident as he remarked, “Oh, we won by miles” after the race. It’s refreshing to see a royal who enjoys getting active and engaging with the local community.
Bosher, a member of the team, expressed how much of an honor it was to race with His Highness. He noted, “He loves to engage in sporty activities, so this was right up his alley.” The team motto, “party hard, paddle hard,” seemed to resonate with the Prince, who embraced the spirit of the event wholeheartedly.
Looking Ahead: A Royal Visit with Purpose
After the exciting day on the water, Prince William is set to visit the Istana at around 6:30 PM, where he will meet with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. This marks his second visit to Singapore, following an official trip with his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, back in 2012.
As the Prince engages with Singapore, it’s a reminder of the importance of community and environmental awareness. Being mindful of our surroundings helps everyone learn about conservation, recycling, and reducing pollution. By fostering this awareness, we can all contribute to making a positive impact on our planet.
