Shocking Case of Elderly Abuse in Sengkang: A Call for Better Care
When Mr. Xue received the distressing news from Sengkang General Hospital that his 86-year-old mother had fractured her thigh, alarm bells went off in his mind. This wasn’t the first time he had noticed injuries on her body. As reported by Shin Min Daily News, the 56-year-old bank employee has been deeply troubled by the care his mother has been receiving.
A Disturbing Pattern of Injuries
Mr. Xue’s mother suffers from dementia and has been bedridden since a stroke last February. To help care for her, he hired a domestic worker from Myanmar, Oo Win Kyi, 32. However, things took a turn for the worse. In April last year, Mr. Xue discovered injuries on his mother’s fingers. When he confronted Oo, she claimed that his mother had bitten herself.
Over the following months, more bruises appeared, including marks on her face. Each time Mr. Xue raised his concerns, Oo insisted that his mother was simply clumsy. Despite taking his mother to the doctor, they were reassured that such bruising was common among elderly individuals with mobility issues.
Uncovering the Truth
On October 19, Mr. Xue noticed his mother’s left leg was severely swollen. Once again, Oo attributed the injury to a fall. This time, however, something didn’t feel right. He took his mother to Sengkang General Hospital, where doctors confirmed the heartbreaking news: she had a fractured thigh.
After reviewing CCTV footage from their home, Mr. Xue’s brother discovered that Oo had been mistreating their mother for some time. Alarmed, they contacted the police. Currently, the elderly woman remains hospitalized, as reported by Shin Min.
Details of the Assault
According to The Straits Times, on the afternoon of October 19, Oo had helped the elderly woman to the edge of her bed for some exercise. However, the victim slumped to the floor. After lifting her back to bed, Oo allegedly punched her four times on the left side of her face, causing her to fall again. On October 17, she reportedly bit the victim’s hand and struck her with an abs roller.
Oo has since pleaded guilty to one charge of assaulting a vulnerable person and was sentenced to 13 months in jail. District Judge Koo Zhi Xuan condemned the violence, stressing the unacceptable nature of such acts, especially from someone entrusted with care.
The Importance of Protecting Our Vulnerable
This troubling incident underscores the urgent need for better protection and care for vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly. It highlights the importance of raising awareness and providing proper training for caregivers to ensure the safety and well-being of those in their care.
Why is it crucial to enhance protection for our elderly? As a society, we must ensure that our loved ones, especially those who are frail and unable to defend themselves, receive the compassion and care they deserve.

Understanding the significance of this care is crucial as it fosters a supportive environment for all.
By recognizing the challenges faced by our elderly, we can collectively work towards enhancing caregiver training programs and awareness initiatives. This can lead to a more compassionate society where everyone, especially our seniors, receives the respect and care they deserve.
