Trust Betrayed: Maid Steals Over $6,000 from Elderly Employer
A shocking incident has left a family in Singapore heartbroken. While helping her elderly mother update her bankbook in June, a woman discovered that a staggering amount of money was missing from her mother’s account. What started as a routine task turned into a nightmare when they found out that the elderly woman, who had saved over $7,000, was left with just $3. The culprit? Their maid.
How It Happened
The maid, a 32-year-old Indonesian national, was hired in August last year to assist with household chores and care for the employer’s 69-year-old mother in their HDB flat in Bukit Batok. Taking advantage of the elderly woman’s limited use of technology, the maid set up an online banking and PayNow account using the woman’s bank details on her own phone.
To carry out her scheme, she used her email address and the elderly woman’s mobile number to receive one-time passwords (OTPs), which she promptly deleted after use. Between April 19 and June 13, she conducted 19 transactions, transferring a total of $6,653.87 from the woman’s account. Some of this money was spent on online shopping, while the majority was sent back home to Indonesia to pay off debts.
The Deceit Unfolds
But that wasn’t all. The maid also stole the elderly woman’s ATM card, making four fraudulent withdrawals and charges totaling $1,585 between March 25 and April 21. She cleverly returned the card to its original spot after each use to avoid detection. On June 13, she transferred $700 to her own bank account and the very next day, she claimed she needed to return to Indonesia to care for her sick mother.
It wasn’t until June 19, five days after her departure, that the employer discovered the theft. The maid was arrested upon her return to Singapore on October 7.
A Heartbroken Family
The elderly woman expressed her devastation, saying, “When she left, they checked her account and found that the balance, which was initially about $7,000, was reduced to only $3.” She felt truly heartbroken, knowing that she might never recover the stolen money.
The family had previously given the maid money for various reasons, including claims that her father needed to buy a motorcycle and that her family members were unwell.
Lessons Learned: Protecting Yourself
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of trust and vigilance when hiring domestic helpers. Singaporeans must take this opportunity to educate themselves on proper hiring procedures and safeguard their finances.
