Bee Attack Shakes Residents at Lagoon View Condominium
On Thursday, December 14, residents at Lagoon View, a condominium in East Coast, faced a shocking incident when a swarm of bees attacked a couple and two security guards. The drama didn’t end there; the next morning, another security guard was stung as the bees returned.
Leung Ming Sui, a resident, described the scene as “quite horrifying.” One of the guards was stung so badly that his entire face became red and swollen. With swarms buzzing around, the guards had no choice but to fend them off using electric fans.
Chaos Unfolds Amidst the Buzz
Yusof, a cleaner at the condo, recounted the chaos. He estimated that there were “at least 300 to 400 bees.” He attempted to spray insecticide without realizing the sheer number of bees he was dealing with. When asked to locate the hive, he was unable to find it and left a bottle of insecticide for the security team as a precaution.
Jenny, a 71-year-old retiree living in the estate, shared her long history of dealing with bees nesting in flower pots. “I usually just spray them with insecticide, and things are much better now. I didn’t realize this was happening,” she said. Her brother expressed concern for the children living in the area, saying, “Adults might manage, but I’m worried about the kids.”
Finding the Hive
Residents later learned that the exterminator discovered the beehive at the entrance of the estate, nestled in a large tree near the security room. The hive, shaped like a long strip, was hidden about six meters above the ground. Experts believe the bees that stung the guards were likely Malayan honey bees, provoked by disturbances near their hive.
The apartment management committee acted quickly, contacting a pest control company to handle the situation. They assured residents that safety was their top priority during the hive removal process.

According to Zheng Guangzhe from WTG Pest Control, bees typically don’t attack unless provoked. He explained that there are two main methods for hive removal: relocation and culling. To avoid stings, it’s best for individuals to keep their distance from bees and not disturb them.
In response to the incident, the Singapore Civil Defence Force confirmed they received a call for assistance at 5000 Marine Parade Road around 5:30 PM on December 14. Three individuals were taken to Changi General Hospital for treatment.
