Mandai is buzzing with discussions, and it’s not about ghost stories! Recently, the National Environment Agency (NEA) announced plans for a new columbarium complex at the intersection of Mandai Avenue and Sembawang Road. Koh, a resident of Hong Heng Mansions, expressed his fears that this project might jeopardize their chances of a collective sale. Toh, who has called the neighbourhood home for over 20 years, believes sensitive projects like columbaria should be situated away from residential spaces. He suggested that there are plenty of suitable locations near Upper Seletar Reservoir that could be considered instead.

Toh feels disappointed, stating that the decision to build another columbarium disrupts the peaceful environment that attracted many families to the area.

NEA’s Response and Community Feedback

The NEA has assured residents that the site was chosen after consultations with various agencies, taking into account traffic impact and surrounding developments. They plan to conduct an environmental impact assessment and feasibility study before finalising the plans.

Interestingly, not everyone is against the idea. Some residents, like an anonymous local, mentioned that living near a columbarium doesn’t bother them. Poh, another resident, argued that in land-scarce Singapore, having a space for paying respects to loved ones is practical. He hopes Singaporeans can be more civic-minded and consider the needs of others before jumping to conclusions.

A History of Community Concerns

This isn’t the first time residents have raised alarms over a columbarium in their vicinity. Back in 2015, residents of Fernvale Lea BTO were upset about plans for a columbarium near their HDB flats. Many attended discussions with local MPs, and some even sought refunds for their BTO purchases. Ultimately, while the columbarium plans were scrapped, a Chinese temple was built in its place, which opened to the public in May 2019.
