A quiet evening turned chaotic at a steamed bun shop in Pasir Ris when a teenager attempted to rob the store, leaving the owner’s wife with a serious injury. This incident, which took place around 6pm on Thursday (January 11) at Elias Mall, has left the community in shock.
The Incident Unfolds
According to Chen, the victim’s husband, there were no customers in the shop at the time. The 61-year-old shared that the teenager approached them speaking in English, but they couldn’t understand him. Thinking he was interested in buying steamed buns, Chen handed him a menu. Instead of ordering, the teen suddenly brandished a sharp weapon and pointed it at the cash register.
Realising they were being robbed, the couple raised their hands and tried to calm the teenager down. Chen was ready to hand over the cash to protect himself and his wife. As he reached for the money, his wife noticed a passer-by and shouted for help, urging him not to give the cash. Startled, the teenager threw the weapon, which struck Chen’s wife in the chest, causing her to bleed.

Chen wanted to pursue the robber but couldn’t leave his injured wife alone. He quickly called his family for assistance while a nearby shop owner called for an ambulance. His wife was taken to the hospital, where she received stitches and a tetanus shot.
Despite only being open for two months, the bakery became the scene of a significant police response, with over ten officers arriving to investigate. A shoe believed to belong to the teenager was found nearby, and it’s suspected that the weapon was stolen from a hardware stall in the same mall. CCTV footage showed the teenager entering the hardware store, but no one noticed him stealing as they were preoccupied.

He Meili, Chen’s wife, recalled the terrifying moment when blood poured from her chest. She attempted to seek treatment at a nearby clinic, but it was closed. Their daughter, Chen Yuhao, expressed disbelief at the incident, especially since the shop had just opened. Plans for installing CCTV cameras were already in motion.
The police confirmed that they were notified about the attempted robbery and reported that a 56-year-old woman sustained minor injuries.
