Singaporean’s Epic Response to US TikToker’s ‘Native Language’ Challenge: ‘We Speak English’ and So Much More!

The Singaporean Accent Takes Center Stage in New Viral TikTok Video

Recently, a TikTok video by US-based creator @Hikhann_, known as Khan, has put the unmistakable Singaporean accent in the spotlight. With over 75,000 followers, Khan is famous for his street interviews, asking strangers about their outfits and jobs. In a clip shared on January 8, he approached a stylishly dressed man in New York City, and what followed was a delightful exchange that caught the attention of netizens.

The Encounter

Khan kicked off the conversation by asking, “What do you do for a living?” The man revealed he is an associate director at a company. When asked about his passion for his job, he mentioned, “I create amazing consumer goods,” but when it came to his five-year plan, he admitted, “I don’t know.” It was a tough question for him!

As the conversation continued, Khan complimented the man’s accent, saying, “Where are you from? You have a nice accent.” Upon learning he was from Singapore, Khan asked a surprising question: “How do you say ‘what do you do for a living’ in your native language?” The Singaporean, with a hint of resignation, replied, “They speak English.” Khan quickly apologised, saying, “Oh, they speak English, I’m so sorry, have a good one.”

The video has since gone viral, racking up over 220,000 views and more than 340 comments. Many viewers instantly recognised the man as a Singaporean because of his distinctive accent and vibe. One user even remarked, “They noticed the Singaporean energy from a mile away!” Another commented on how rare it is for Singaporeans to receive compliments about their accent. However, some users debated whether English is truly the native language of Singaporeans. On a lighter note, a user playfully translated the question into “native Singlish” as, “He works as what, ah?”
