Otter Attacks Leave Bukit Timah Fish Lover Devastated Again
Imagine waking up to find your beloved fish under attack – that’s exactly what happened to Tham Yuen Ying in Bukit Timah. Just over a year after losing her koi to otters, she was shocked to discover that the furry intruders had returned on January 17, around 7 am. This time, they targeted her arowanas, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
History Repeats Itself
In October 2022, Tham faced a heartbreaking loss when otters wiped out about $20,000 worth of koi fish. After that incident, she and her family decided to take a break from fish-keeping until they felt secure again. But in March 2023, she thought it was safe to dive back into her hobby and brought home arowanas, believing their bony structure would keep the otters at bay.
Sadly, her optimism was short-lived. Just this week, her helper witnessed the otters attacking her fish. Despite their best efforts to scare the otters away, the determined creatures continued their rampage. “They didn’t just eat them; they killed them,” Tham recounted in an interview with Shin Min Daily News. “They gouged out their eyeballs and chewed off their fins.”
Counting the Cost
Out of the remaining six arowanas, only two or three are still healthy. The otters left behind a grim scene, with dead fish scattered around her home and some floating in the pond. Tham estimates her losses at around $10,000, as each arowana costs about $1,000. Heartbroken, she plans to send the surviving fish to a fisheries to protect them from further attacks and has no plans to keep any more fish for now.
