Get Ready, Singapore! Exercise SG Ready Kicks Off Nationwide
On February 15, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong officially launched Singapore’s first islandwide Total Defence exercise, Exercise SG Ready, during the Total Defence Day Commemoration Event. This significant initiative poses a crucial question: “Are we ready for disruptions?” It aims to prepare Singaporeans for potential crises and challenges.
What’s Happening During Exercise SG Ready?
Running until February 29, Exercise SG Ready will see participation from over 500 organizations, including schools, community groups, businesses, and government agencies. These entities will engage in simulated attacks on Singapore, testing our readiness for various threats.
Total Defence Day is commemorated every year on February 15, marking the day Singapore fell to Japanese forces in 1942 during World War II. This year, Singaporeans are encouraged to reaffirm their commitment to Total Defence.
The Importance of Community Involvement
In a video message, DPM Wong highlighted that the key to Singapore’s security lies in the determination of its people. “Everyone has a role to play in defending Singapore,” he stated. He emphasized that together, we can be ready, resilient, and strong.
Minister for Defence Dr. Ng Eng Hen, who was the guest of honour at the launch, echoed this sentiment. He pointed out the volatile global security landscape, citing conflicts in Europe and potential tensions in Asia. Dr. Ng stressed that self-defence is a continuous effort, stating that Exercise SG Ready is just a small part of our broader Total Defence strategy.
What to Expect During the Exercise
From February 15 to 29, the exercise will simulate various hybrid security threats from an anonymous aggressor. These include:
– Cyber attacks
– Disinformation campaigns
– Drone assaults
Additionally, there will be simulated disruptions to essential services like power, water, and food supply at selected schools on February 15 and 16. Emergency food and water supplies will be made available during this period.
Over the next two weeks, community facilities, commercial, and government buildings will also conduct simulated disruptions. This includes temporary stoppages of escalators and air-conditioning systems. Notably, 20 prominent public buildings, such as the Treasury and the Supreme Court, will turn off their facade lighting to simulate a blackout caused by a cyber attack on the power grid.
