Courageous Woman Embraces Life: Cancer Patient Hosts Living Funeral

A Heartfelt Farewell: The Living Funeral of Michelle Ng

Imagine gathering with your loved ones for a final celebration of life, filled with laughter, music, and heartfelt words. This was the touching scene at the living funeral of Michelle Ng, affectionately known as Mike, who bravely faced her battle with cancer. On December 23 last year, surrounded by friends and family in her home, Ng wanted to create a special moment of connection before saying goodbye.

A Journey of Strength

In 2021, at just 27 years old, Michelle was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer. Before her diagnosis, she was an active individual who loved cycling, running, and even ran her own wearables business. Sadly, by the end of 2022, Ng learned that her cancer had spread. Despite undergoing treatment in 2023, her condition worsened, leading her to seek care from HCA Hospice’s home hospice programme.

When Jayne Leong, a principal medical social worker at HCA, suggested a living funeral, Ng embraced the idea wholeheartedly. She wanted this gathering to be more than just a farewell; she aimed to create a space where love and memories could flourish.

Creating Lasting Memories

Ng chose to call the event a living funeral instead of a celebration of life. She believed that acknowledging mortality could bring people closer, rather than instilling fear. Picture it as a cozy birthday party, complete with good food, music, and heartfelt messages. Over 30 guests, including HCA staff, came together to honour her. They were invited to write her final letters and even participated in a book exchange.

Adding to the joy of the day, Rai, a musician from Ng’s favourite local band, Jack & Rai, performed live. The atmosphere was filled with laughter as Ng sang along, clapped, and shared her signature quips. She expressed her gratitude, saying, “Thank you for making me so happy today.”

A Lasting Impact

Tragically, Ng passed away on January 2, just over a week after her living funeral. However, she cherished every moment of joy, laughter, and love shared that day. Her story, shared by HCA Hospice on Valentine’s Day, highlights the importance of treasuring moments with our loved ones.

Prioritising Relationships in Our Lives

Ng’s journey serves as a poignant reminder to appreciate life and those around us. So, how can we create meaningful experiences with our loved ones? Here are some practical suggestions:

– **Schedule Regular Family Time:** Set aside dedicated evenings for family dinners or weekend outings.
– **Engage in Bonding Activities:** Cook together, take walks, or play games to strengthen your connections.
– **Express Gratitude:** Simple gestures like handwritten notes or verbal affirmations can nurture deeper relationships.

By actively investing time and effort into our relationships, we can create lasting memories and foster a sense of closeness with those we care about.
