Prince William Joins Local Paddlers for a Thrilling Dragon Boat Race
It’s not every day that you get to paddle alongside a British royal! On November 6, 19 lucky paddlers had an unforgettable experience when Prince William joined the British Dragons Boat Racing Team for a training session at Marina Reservoir.
A Royal Race at Marina Reservoir
Dressed casually in a white polo tee and a black cap, the Prince took his place in the middle of the boat, ready to race. His team quickly emerged victorious, and after the race, they gathered for a chat. The paddlers praised him for being a “natural” and noted how he “didn’t miss a stroke.”
Chris Bosher, the captain of Prince William’s boat, shared how engaged the Prince was during the event. “He was super engaged when speaking to the media,” Bosher said. The Prince’s team triumphed over another boat led by British High Commissioner Kara Owen.
A Competitive Spirit
The crew members revealed that this wasn’t Prince William’s first experience with dragon boating. He mentioned having paddled before during his school days and while in Canada. Kirthana Lakshman, the crew’s treasurer, remarked, “His Royal Highness was very competitive. He clearly did his homework because he knew he was part of the engines, which is the critical part of the boat.”
After the race, the Prince enthusiastically exclaimed, “Oh, we won by miles!” He expressed how much he enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, saying it was a refreshing change from the usual formalities of royal visits. “He said he loves sporty activities, so this was right up his alley,” Bosher added, highlighting how much of an honour it was for the team to race with him.
Earthshot Prize Ceremony on the Horizon
Prince William is in Singapore for the third annual Earthshot Prize ceremony, scheduled for November 7. During this event, he will present awards to 20 change-makers from around the globe who are dedicated to finding solutions for saving our planet.
Today, he will also meet with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana. This marks the Prince’s second visit to Singapore, following his official trip in 2012 with his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales.
Positive Environmental Steps
