Prince William Takes on Dragon Boating in Singapore
It’s not every day you get to paddle alongside a British royal! On November 6, 19 lucky paddlers had the unique experience of racing with Prince William during a training session with the British Dragon Boat Racing team at Marina Reservoir. Dressed in a crisp white polo and a black cap, the Prince jumped right into the action, paddling energetically in the middle of the boat.
A Competitive Spirit
His team quickly clinched victory, and the atmosphere was filled with excitement. After the race, the paddlers praised Prince William for being a “natural” at dragon boating, noting that he “didn’t miss a stroke.” Captain Chris Bosher shared that the Prince was “super engaged” throughout the session. In fact, he was so keen to win that he jokingly declared, “Seriously guys, I want to win this!”
The crew members revealed that this wasn’t Prince William’s first encounter with dragon boating. He mentioned having tried it before at school and during his time in Canada. Kirthana Lakshman, the crew’s treasurer, remarked on his competitive edge, saying, “He really did his homework and knew he was part of the engines, which is the critical part of the boat.” After the race, he proudly exclaimed, “Oh, we won by miles!”
A Refreshing Break
For Prince William, this dragon boating session was a refreshing escape from the busy schedule of meetings and conferences that often accompany his visits. He expressed how much he enjoys sporty activities, making this experience right up his alley. Bosher added that it was a “real honour” for the team to race alongside His Highness.
The team motto, “party hard, paddle hard,” was clearly embraced by the Prince, as evident from his lively Instagram posts.
Upcoming Earthshot Prize Ceremony
Prince William, who is in Singapore for the third annual Earthshot Prize ceremony, will present awards aimed at inspiring a decade of environmental action. The medal awarded is a symbol of hope for the planet’s healing over the next ten years.
During his visit, he will also meet with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. This marks his second trip to Singapore, following an official visit in 2012 with his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales.
A Unique Opportunity for Singaporeans
For Singaporeans, meeting Prince William is more than just a chance encounter; it’s an opportunity to learn about British culture and engage with a royal who is down-to-earth and willing to try new things. This kind of interaction fosters a greater understanding between cultures, making it a memorable experience for everyone involved.
