Surprise Charge for a Lid Leaves Customer Fuming

A recent visit to a cafe in Jurong East turned into a frustrating experience for one woman who was caught off guard by a 10-cent charge for a “takeaway lid.” Koh Shu Zhen, 34, expressed her disappointment on the Complaint Singapore Facebook page, highlighting how even larger establishments like Ya Kun Kaya Toast don’t impose such fees.

The Incident at Coffeeman Cafe

On November 6, around 3.20pm, Koh and her friend decided to grab two cups of teh at Coffeeman cafe, located at the Devan Nair Institute. When they ordered, the cashier asked if they wanted to “cover” their drinks, which Koh interpreted as a standard practice. However, she was unaware that this would come with an extra cost.

Koh pointed out that all drinks at the cafe were served in takeaway cups, making the charge seem unnecessary. She felt misled, stating that it wasn’t just about the 10 cents, but rather the lack of transparency from the staff.

Feeling Cheated

After enjoying their drinks, Koh discovered the extra charge only when her friend checked the receipt. She felt cheated and angry, especially since the cashier didn’t mention any additional fees when discussing the lid. Koh explained that if they had been informed about the charge upfront, they wouldn’t have minded paying for it.

While the receipt showed a 10-cent charge for one lid, the cashier later clarified that both drinks came with lids. This lack of communication left Koh feeling frustrated, as she had already consumed her drink and didn’t approach the staff about the issue.

Seeking Clarity

AsiaOne reached out to Coffeeman cafe for further details regarding their pricing policy. This incident raises questions about transparency in cafes and whether customers should be informed about additional charges for seemingly standard items.
