In a shocking case of animal neglect, a man has been sentenced to 20 days in jail for abandoning his 43 cats in deplorable living conditions. Muhammad Danial Sukirman, 31, pleaded guilty to 10 charges of causing unnecessary pain and suffering to his pets on April 24, as reported by Lianhe Zaobao. This case stands out as the largest animal cruelty prosecution by the National Parks Board (NParks) in Singapore, highlighting the urgent need for responsible pet ownership.

Discovery of the Abandoned Cats

The appalling situation came to light on November 5, 2021, when police were alerted to a foul smell emanating from a flat in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6. Residents had lodged complaints, prompting authorities to investigate. Unable to reach Danial, the police had to call a locksmith to gain access to the flat. Inside, they found over 30 cats living in cramped, unsanitary conditions without food, clean water, or proper ventilation. Tragically, two dead cats and skeletal remains were also discovered.

Following this grim discovery, the police notified the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS), a division of NParks. AVS officers contacted Danial the same day and arranged an inspection of the flat three days later.

The Backstory

Danial and his wife had moved into the flat to live with his mother-in-law in January 2016. Initially, they started with just three cats. However, after his mother-in-law passed away, Danial took over their care. Without sterilization, the cats multiplied rapidly, and Danial lost track of their numbers.

In July 2021, the couple relocated to a new flat in Yishun and were given six months to vacate the Ang Mo Kio flat. Unfortunately, Danial failed to find homes for the cats and ultimately abandoned them. He would visit once a week to feed them a single large bag of dry kibble, which resulted in fights among the animals.

Health Consequences for the Cats

After the inspection, Danial surrendered 41 surviving cats, while the remains of the other two were handed over to AVS. A veterinarian examined the cats and noted that all had suffered “pain and distress” due to a lack of access to clean water. The only water source was a dripping tap in the toilet, creating a pool of dirty brown water likely contaminated with feces.

Nineteen cats were diagnosed with alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss due to underlying health issues, and three tested positive for ringworm. The NParks prosecutor, Farisha Asharaff, argued that a fine would be too lenient given the circumstances, seeking a jail term for Danial, who neglected the living conditions despite being aware of the cats’ uncontrolled breeding.
