However, the requests didn’t stop there. Soon after, he asked for an additional $150,000 to set up a business. Trusting him, she withdrew the money and handed it over to an intermediary on September 7.

The situation escalated when she posted a receipt of the $23,800 payment on Facebook, mentioning a total transfer of $273,800. A friend of her brothers noticed these alarming posts and alerted them. Upon investigation, her brothers found suspicious messages from ‘Chenghan’ and promptly reported the matter to the police.

The accomplice involved in this scam, Mortel Virgilio Jr Marcial, was sentenced to 11 months in jail for his role. He admitted to handling victims’ money for the fraud group, having received $150,000 from the retiree and $12,000 from another victim on the same day. Marcial kept a portion of the money as a reward and transferred the rest to another accomplice, converting it into virtual currency.

In his defense, Marcial expressed remorse for his actions, citing financial struggles as a reason for his involvement. He appealed for leniency, hoping to return to his family, which includes his parents and two children.
