Unbelievable Twist: Family of 3 Escapes Fatal Whampoa Fire While Holidaying in JB

Tragic Fire Claims Life of Beloved Hawker in Whampoa

In the early hours of Monday (May 6), a devastating fire broke out in a three-room flat at Blk 76 Lorong Limau, Whampoa, claiming the life of 60-year-old hawker Cai Wanyuan. His wife and mother were rescued by firefighters, but the incident has left the family grappling with loss and unanswered questions.

Family on Vacation During the Incident

At the time of the fire, Cai’s youngest son, Cai Jincheng, 29, was on vacation in Johor Bahru with his wife and their four-year-old daughter. Speaking to Lianhe Zaobao at the mortuary on Tuesday, he expressed the family’s desperate need for answers about the fire’s cause and why his father couldn’t escape from the bedroom. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) is currently investigating the incident.

A Heartbreaking Sequence of Events

According to a relative who wished to remain anonymous, Cai was asleep when he first noticed the fire in the living room. He quickly woke his wife and instructed her to check on his mother, who was resting in the utility room. Tragically, the three were unable to escape the flames. The SCDF later rescued the women from the utility room, and they were taken to the hospital but discharged the next day. They will be staying temporarily with Cai Jincheng’s aunt.

The Cai Family’s Legacy

The Cai family has deep roots in the hawker community. For over 40 years, Cai Wanyuan and his wife operated Hi Leskmi Nasi Lemak at the nearby Whampoa Makan Place. His younger brother, Cai Wancai, runs a roast meat stall at the same hawker centre, while their mother sells braised duck there. The family has expanded their business, with additional Leskmi Nasi Lemak branches in Punggol, East Coast, and Tampines, managed by Cai Jincheng and his second brother. The latest branch in Tampines opened in March, according to a review on the popular food blog Sethlui.com.
