Geylang Stallholders Address Rodent Sighting: Claims of Clean Premises Amidst Scandal

Big Rat Spotted at Geylang Coffee Shop: What You Need to Know

While taking a leisurely walk past a coffee shop in Geylang, a passer-by was taken aback by the sight of a large rat sniffing around one of the food stalls. Marilyn Crow shared a video in the Facebook group Complaint Singapore on Saturday morning (May 11), capturing the rodent darting around a stall and jumping onto a stack of trays. The video prominently featured the signboard of the coffee shop chain, Food Loft.

Immediate Response from Stallholders

A reporter from The News Source visited the coffee shop later that night and found the food stalls thoroughly cleaned, with no signs of any rodents. Huang, the cai fan stallholder, explained that all stallholders are diligent about disposing of leftover food and cleaning their stalls at closing time to prevent attracting pests. Unfortunately, on the day the rat was spotted, Huang had forgotten to throw away a plastic bag containing leftover food.

He assured that they would be more vigilant in the future, stating, “The trays have also been cleaned.” Huang also mentioned that their boss had seen the video and stressed the importance of maintaining food hygiene and cleanliness at the stalls.

Rats: A Common Challenge

Huang acknowledged that it’s quite challenging for coffee shops to be completely rat-free. He noted that they had already conducted a thorough cleaning of the area and observed that rats tend to appear after closing hours when the lights are off. Interestingly, they usually avoid the area when there are people around. As of Saturday, Huang confirmed that no customers had raised any concerns about the cleanliness of the coffee shop, and business remained unaffected.

Stallholders Speak Out

Other stallholders also shared their experiences with The News Source. An employee from the Western food stall, known as He, highlighted that hygiene is a top priority for them. He mentioned that the coffee shop arranges for pest control and rat control activities two to three times a month. He added that he has never encountered rodents at his stall and has never found a dead rat on the premises.

However, another stallholder, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed to have seen a rodent scurrying across the beams of the coffee shop. “Which coffee shop doesn’t have rats?” they remarked, noting that everyone cleans their stalls at closing time and that owners regularly remind them not to leave any food behind.

The Importance of Food Hygiene

This incident underscores the critical importance of food hygiene in our beloved hawker centres and coffee shops. It presents an opportunity for coffee shop owners and stallholders to enhance their vigilance in maintaining high cleanliness standards.

Stricter regulations and regular inspections by relevant authorities could ensure that coffee shop owners and stallholders are held accountable for their hygiene practices. Additionally, providing training and resources to educate food handlers on proper hygiene can significantly improve food safety standards in these establishments.

Encouraging Training for Better Hygiene Practices

How can we motivate coffee shop owners and stallholders to engage in training programs aimed at improving hygiene knowledge? Offering incentives such as certification upon completion of training, discounts on licensing fees for establishments with trained staff, or organizing on-site workshops could encourage participation.

By fostering a culture of cleanliness and accountability, we can ensure that our food establishments remain safe and enjoyable for everyone.
