Join the Fight Against Cybercrime: Become a Cyber Guardian on Watch
Are you concerned about online scams and cybercrimes in Singapore? You’re not alone! With the rise of digital threats, it’s more important than ever to stay informed and vigilant. That’s why the Singapore Police Force (SPF) has launched the Cyber Guardians on Watch (CGW) initiative, and you can be part of it!
What is the Cyber Guardians on Watch Initiative?
Launched at the Police Workplan Seminar 2024 on May 24, the CGW program invites volunteers to help spread awareness about online scams and cyber threats in their communities. As a CGW, you’ll receive updates from the police and learn how to monitor online platforms for suspicious activities.
Even seasoned professionals are not immune to scams. Take Dennis Chung, a 45-year-old chief security officer at Microsoft, for example. Despite his extensive experience, he fell victim to an e-commerce scam. This motivated him to join the CGW initiative, aiming to educate his family and friends about the dangers lurking online.
How Can You Get Involved?
Anyone can register as a CGW through the Police@SG app. It’s a simple way to stay informed about the latest scam trends and cybercrimes.
But that’s not all! SPF has also introduced the Cyber Crime Prevention Ambassadors (Cyber CPA) program. These ambassadors receive formal training from the police to educate the community about preventing cybercrime through roadshows and events.
Meet the Ambassadors: Raja Sekaran’s Story
Raja Sekaran, a 57-year-old former cybersecurity professional, joined as a Cyber CPA to share his expertise with small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and individuals. He highlights the vulnerability of unsuspecting victims and the need for better preparedness against data breaches and hacks.
In 2023 alone, Singapore saw a staggering 46,563 reported scam cases, the highest since tracking began in 2016. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for community involvement in combating cybercrime.
Police Initiatives to Combat Scams
The SPF is taking proactive steps to tackle this issue. They plan to extend the operating hours of the National Crime Prevention Council’s anti-scam helpline, currently available from 9 am to 5 pm on weekdays. The helpline will also be easier to remember with a new four-digit number: 1799.
Additionally, SPF is exploring a one-stop portal to consolidate anti-scam resources, making it easier for the public to access information and assistance. A Self-Lodging Police Report Chatbot powered by artificial intelligence is also in the works, aiming to help users submit concise reports quickly.
Why Your Participation Matters
This is a fantastic opportunity for Singaporeans to play an active role in creating a safer online environment. By becoming a CGW or a Cyber CPA, you can help raise awareness about online scams and contribute to the community’s safety.
To encourage more participation, it would be helpful to provide clearer information on how to get involved. Details about the application process, training provided, and ongoing support for volunteers can make a significant difference.
Highlighting the impact of these roles in enhancing community safety will further motivate individuals to join the initiative.
