Trapped SBS Transit Driver Rescued After Collision with Lorry
A dramatic morning unfolded along Loyang Avenue when an SBS Transit bus collided with a lorry, leaving the bus driver trapped in his seat. The incident, which occurred around 9:30 AM, prompted a swift response from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). Eyewitnesses shared shocking clips and photos on Facebook, showing one lorry wedged between two SBS Transit buses, with the back of the lorry piercing through the front windshield of the bus behind it.
Eyewitness Account
A 32-year-old resident named Xin was jolted awake by the loud crash. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing when I rushed outside,” he told Shin Min Daily News. Fortunately, about 40 passengers had already exited the buses before firefighters from Changi and Tampines Fire Stations arrived on the scene.
Rescue Operations
To ensure the safety of the trapped bus driver, a firefighter bravely positioned himself inside the bus during the rescue operation. The SCDF explained, “We used hydraulic rescue equipment to pull back the dashboard and steering wheel, which had been forced inwards due to the impact.” Once the lorry was removed, it was clear that the bus had sustained severe damage, particularly to the left side of its front windshield.
Traffic Disruption
The accident caused significant traffic disruption, blocking two lanes and leading to a lengthy jam. The police reported that both the 31-year-old lorry driver and the 69-year-old bus driver were conscious when transported to the hospital. Investigations into the incident are currently ongoing.
Company Response
Grace Wu, a spokesperson for SBS Transit, confirmed to Shin Min that bus service 59 had rear-ended the lorry, causing it to collide with another bus. She reassured that no passengers were injured in the accident. The bus driver and lorry driver received medical treatment for cuts and abrasions, with the bus driver receiving outpatient care. SBS Transit is in contact with the lorry driver to provide assistance and is cooperating with the traffic police during their investigations.
