Residents in Punggol Raise Alarm Over Rubbish Pile-Up

The sight of rubbish piling up at a Build-To-Order (BTO) estate in Punggol has left many residents feeling uneasy. Not only is it blocking pathways, but it also raises serious safety concerns. Concerns About Cleanliness and Safety

Andy, who moved into his flat just this February, described the rubbish as a “mountain.” He worries about the cleanliness of the estate and the fire hazards posed by the growing pile. “I can’t stand it anymore,” he expressed, urging that action needs to be taken.

With only about 30% of the flats in the new estate occupied, Andy has noticed an alarming increase in rubbish as renovation works continue. He mentioned that they have caught some culprits in the act of dumping trash but felt powerless to take action. Despite warnings from the authorities against illegal dumping, the issue persists. “It’s the contractor’s responsibility,” Andy said. “The renovation costs should cover cleanup, so why are they dumping rubbish like this?”

Community Frustration Grows

Another resident, Wu, 48, echoed Andy’s sentiments. He observed that even though cleaners regularly remove the rubbish, it keeps piling up in the same spot. “It’s tough for the workers,” Wu noted, as he watched fellow residents improperly dispose of their trash.

During a recent visit by a reporter, four cleaners were seen clearing a significant amount of refuse along the walkway. One cleaner shared that they start their day at 6 am and work for at least 14 hours, but clearing all the rubbish in the estate in a single day is a daunting task.

Missing Bins and Confusion Among Residents

A notice from the Pasir-Ris Punggol Town Council had instructed residents to dispose of bulky items at green refuse bins near the block’s entrance. However, on June 12, the bin was missing, and the area was blocked by poles. This led to confusion among residents about whether the rubbish was being dumped by renovation contractors or their neighbours.

In response to inquiries, a spokesperson from the Pasir-Ris Punggol Town Council explained that the basement car park has not yet been handed over by the Housing and Development Board (HDB). They are working with HDB to resolve the issue and have deployed workers to clear the “large volume of dumped items,” although the rubbish keeps accumulating rapidly.
