Meet the 66-Year-Old Kallang Resident Who Turns Trash Pickup into a Daily 8-Hour Workout Routine

Meet the Kallang Clean-Up Champion: Looi’s Inspiring Journey

Five years ago, a resident from Kallang named Looi took it upon himself to clean up litter around his HDB block during his free time. Fast forward to 2023, and after retiring, he has dedicated even more hours to keeping his community spotless. According to Shin Min Daily News, Looi now spends an impressive eight hours each day picking up trash in his estate.

Inspired by Family

Living at Block 467 Crawford Lane, this 66-year-old man credits his younger sister as his source of inspiration. She returned from Hong Kong five years ago to care for their ailing mother and often helped clear litter around the block. “My sister is very meticulous. She wanted to tidy up the trash and cigarette butts she saw on her way home, so I joined her,” Looi shared.

With the busy foot traffic near Lavender MRT station and several office buildings, the litter seems to multiply quickly. Looi explained that during his working days, he could only pick up rubbish from 7 PM to 10 PM. Now, with more time on his hands, he collects litter in two shifts: from 5 AM to 7:30 AM and again from 4 PM to 10 PM.

More Than Just Litter Picking

Looi’s efforts go beyond just picking up trash. He also helps return abandoned shopping carts and reports cleanliness issues using the OneService app. Interestingly, this daily routine has also become a form of exercise for him. “The doctor advised me not to stay at home all day as it could increase my blood pressure,” he mentioned. Thanks to his active lifestyle, his blood pressure is now well-managed.

Facing Challenges with Resilience

Despite facing criticism for his unpaid efforts, Looi was tempted to give up at one point. However, his sister’s encouragement kept him going. Today, he has received praise from appreciative residents who commend his dedication. In fact, one individual even offered to compensate him as a gesture of gratitude. “I hope more residents can join me in picking up litter,” he expressed. “Even if they can’t, everyone can help maintain the cleanliness of our community.”

Community Recognition

Looi’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. MP for Jalan Besar GRC, Denise Phua, praised his community spirit in a Facebook post on June 28, acknowledging his voluntary efforts as a good neighbour. “The young retiree did it on his own initiative as a good neighbour,” she wrote.

The Crawford area, like many public residential zones in Singapore, attracts numerous visitors, including fans of the famous bak chor mee. Efforts by dedicated individuals like Looi lighten the load for our hardworking town council cleaners.

How You Can Make a Difference

Looi’s story is a powerful reminder that every Singaporean can contribute to their community and environment. Here are some specific actions you can take to follow in his footsteps:

– **Join Community Clean-Up Initiatives:** Participate in local clean-up events organized by community groups or town councils.
– **Start Small:** Begin by picking up litter around your HDB block or nearby parks during your daily walks.
– **Encourage Others:** Share your experiences on social media to inspire friends and family to join you in keeping Singapore clean.

Benefits of Contributing to Your Community

Getting involved in community clean-ups not only helps beautify your surroundings but also offers several benefits:

– **Health Improvement:** Regular physical activity can enhance your overall well-being.
– **Community Bonding:** Working together fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie among residents.
– **Environmental Impact:** Every piece of litter picked up contributes to a cleaner and healthier environment.

Overcoming Challenges

While the desire to contribute is strong, some challenges may arise:

– **Time Constraints:** Busy schedules can make it hard to find time for community service. Consider setting aside just 30 minutes a week to start.
– **Lack of Motivation:** Team up with friends or family to make it a fun group activity.
– **Limited Resources:** Reach out to local community centres for support and resources to help organize clean-up events.

In conclusion, Looi’s commitment to keeping Kallang clean is an inspiring example for all of us. By following his lead, we can all play a part in making Singapore a cleaner and greener place to live. Let’s take action today!
