Otter Invasion: A Shocking Discovery for Bedok Factory Owner
Imagine waking up after a long holiday to find your beloved koi fish gone. That’s exactly what happened to Zheng, a 54-year-old factory owner in Bedok. After the Deepavali weekend, he was devastated to discover all 20 of his koi dead. What could have caused such a tragedy?
Unwelcome Visitors in the Night
Zheng’s nightmare began when he spotted two lifeless fish beside his pond. Confused and alarmed, he reviewed his CCTV footage and was shocked to see four otters sneaking into his property at 3:00 AM on Deepavali. He described the experience as “distressing,” noting that the otters seemed to know exactly where the fish were located.
Zheng had nurtured these fish for over a year, making their loss even more heartbreaking. He wasn’t alone in this unfortunate incident. His neighbor, Cai, also fell victim to the otter attack. Cai’s CCTV revealed that six otters invaded his property, devouring six of his 15 koi.
Impact Beyond the Factories
The otter invasion didn’t stop there. Nearby, the Soon San Teng Temple also reported losses, with many koi snatched from their pond. The temple’s caretaker, who has been there for decades, lamented that this was the first time he had witnessed such a devastating event. He noted that several of his three- and four-month-old koi had been taken by the otters.
This year has seen a significant rise in otter complaints across Singapore. As of September, NParks received over 300 reports related to otter issues, a stark increase from previous years. In 2020, there were 208 complaints, and last year, 305.
What Can Be Done?
To tackle this growing issue, NParks recently held a virtual conference to discuss solutions. Experts suggested that property owners should create gaps between their houses and construct “otter-proof” barriers. Senior Minister of State in National Development, Tan Kiat How, indicated that without such measures, otter populations are unlikely to decline.
Residents like Tham YuenYing, who lost 22 koi—some over 15 years old—while she slept, are feeling the impact. She suspects the otters may have escaped from behind her house, as her entry camera recorded no activity.
