Exclusive: PA Volunteer Shares Secret to Fostering Racial Harmony After 25 Years of Service

Meet Madam Rani: A Heartfelt Community Leader in Zhenghua

In the vibrant Zhenghua estate of Bukit Panjang, residents warmly refer to Mdm Selvarani d/o R V Pannirselram, BBM, as “Madam Rani.” At 54, this devoted mother of five has spent 25 years as a grassroots leader with the People’s Association, tirelessly working to uplift her community.

A Journey of Inspiration

Madam Rani’s journey began over 40 years ago when she was just a teenager. At the age of 15, she visited the Taman Jurong Community Club to receive a bursary. “I felt the warmth from the volunteers there,” she recalled, noting how their friendliness inspired her. Their kindness sparked a desire in her to make a difference in the lives of others.

Creating Joy for the Community

Bringing joy to residents has been the driving force behind Madam Rani’s work. She fondly remembers a young boy from a low-income family who once called her his “Santa Claus” during a Christmas event she organized. “After receiving his gift, he hugged me and said, ‘Auntie, I’m so lucky that you’re my Santa Claus,'” she shared, pausing to wipe away tears. “The smile on his face… there are no words to describe it.”

These heartwarming moments fuel her passion for volunteering, prompting her to organize various community events, including the vibrant Chingay Parade and the Zhenghua Harmony Walk.

Celebrating Diversity Together

This year’s Harmony Walk saw 400 residents embark on a morning stroll that connected local places of worship, such as Al-Iman Mosque, Chi Hock Keng Temple, Sri Arasakesari Sivan Temple, and the Covenant Evangelical Free Church. As the chairperson of the Zhenghua Harmony Circle, Madam Rani emphasized the importance of learning about different cultures. “This year’s event coincided with Mother’s Day, and the mothers received flowers after learning about the history and traditions of the Chinese temple,” she said. The smiles on everyone’s faces were a testament to the joy of unity.

Madam Rani was also among the 34,000 participants at Harmony Fest! 2024, a lively two-day event held at the Singapore Sports Hub. This celebration featured interactive exhibitions, games, and performances from various ethnic groups, promoting awareness and understanding across communities.

Racial Harmony: A Year-Round Commitment

Racial Harmony Day is celebrated on July 21, but Madam Rani believes that fostering harmony should extend beyond a single month. “Racial harmony is not just about one day or one month,” she stated. “It should be celebrated 365 days a year.” She encourages residents to connect with one another in their own languages, fostering trust and understanding. Small gestures, like greeting a Chinese neighbour with “chi fan le mei you?” (Have you eaten?), can spark meaningful conversations.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Madam Rani’s dedication has also inspired her children. Her son, Udthayanithi Chidambaram, 23, shared how their childhood was filled with memories of community events organized by their mother. “We celebrated Chinese New Year and Hari Raya with our neighbours,” he said, recalling the block parties that brought everyone together.

Now, Udthayanithi is giving back to the community as the vice-chairman of the Zhenghua Youth Network. He recently organized a litter-picking activity for local students. “Seeing families benefit and have fun from these activities is rewarding,” he said. Ultimately, it’s about ensuring everyone goes home with a smile, just like his mother has always aimed for.
