The Purchase Journey
Tan forked out $105,800 for the car after visiting Dream Drive’s showroom at Carros Centre on June 1. He was on the lookout for a “safe and reliable” family vehicle. Despite spotting some issues, including “very dark” tinted windows that weren’t approved by the LTA, he signed the contract and paid a $2,000 deposit without hesitation.
A salesman had mentioned that if a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) revealed major gearbox or engine problems, the contract could be cancelled. Tan took the car for a PPI on June 5, where his chosen workshop flagged several “mechanical issues,” including leaking coolant and gearbox troubles. The repair quote came to about $5,220, but Dream Drive agreed to cover some costs if he went ahead with the purchase.
Unresolved Issues
Despite the dealer’s assurances, Tan was unhappy with the quality of repairs done by Dream Drive’s workshop, as many issues remained unresolved. He later took the car to the vehicle inspection centre, STA, where illegal modifications to the headlights and taillights were discovered. Tan estimates it would cost between $10,300 and $11,500 to rectify these modifications and restore the car to its original state.
After contacting the director of Dream Drive, Tan was informed that the repairs were not part of their agreement and that he should have been made aware of all existing issues upfront. Following unsuccessful mediation attempts, Tan filed a claim with the Small Claims Tribunals (SCT), seeking reimbursement for $1,000 in emergency repairs and compensation for the extensive restoration costs.

In response to Tan’s claims, Dream Drive disputed his assertion that he was unaware of the car’s illegal modifications. They stated that he was informed during the viewing that the headlight and bumper had been modified previously.
