Finding Refuge: A Family's Journey from War to Singapore

Imagine fleeing your home with nothing but a few essentials, all while the chaos of war surrounds you. That’s exactly what Mayya Dzhos, 50, and her family faced as they escaped the turmoil of the Ukraine conflict.
“It was all smoke, and the fire was coming towards us,” Mayya recalled, her voice filled with pain. “People were running with bags, and everyone was in such a hurry. It felt unbelievable that this was happening.”
Mayya, along with her younger son Greb, twin daughters Paulina and Angelina, and her husband, embarked on a harrowing journey. Unfortunately, her eldest son had to stay behind due to conscription rules. Before the invasion, their lives in Odessa were peaceful, but that all changed in an instant.

A Long and Winding Journey

The family’s escape was anything but straightforward. They took a long route starting from Vinnitsa, passing through Moldova, Poland, and Rotterdam, before finally making their way back to Moldova. After a challenging journey that lasted 90 hours, they reached Istanbul, where they finally found a flight to Singapore.
Mayya shared that during their travels, even the sound of thunder and rain would send her children into tears, as it reminded them of the frightening rocket showers they had witnessed back home.

Gratitude for Peace

Now in Singapore, Mayya and her family are grateful for their safety, but they still dream of returning to Ukraine one day. With the war ongoing, the future remains uncertain.
This family’s story serves as a powerful reminder for all of us in Singapore. It’s easy to take our peace for granted when we’ve never experienced conflict. As we enjoy our lives in this vibrant city, let’s take a moment to appreciate the stability and safety we often overlook.
In a world filled with uncertainty, let’s be thankful for the peace we have and remember those who are still fighting for theirs.
