Tragic Accidents on Our Roads: A Call for Caution

Two heartbreaking incidents involving children and delivery drivers have raised serious concerns about road safety in Singapore.
On June 16, a mother named Lu was returning home with her 7-year-old son when a delivery truck struck his leg at Woodlands Avenue. The accident happened around 1:40 PM, just as they got off the bus. In a hurry to find shelter from the rain, the boy dashed ahead but didn’t see the oncoming bicycle. The bike collided with his leg, causing him to fall and injure his left calf.
Lu rushed to her son’s side as he bled profusely and trembled in pain. “I was so scared. I couldn’t even remember the ambulance number,” the 40-year-old hairdresser shared. Thankfully, an ambulance arrived, but the delivery rider, who was in a rush to finish his deliveries, initially tried to leave the scene. An elderly lady nearby intervened, reminding him that the boy’s safety was more important than his schedule.
Frustrated, Lu attempted to get the rider's identification, but he refused. Eventually, she called the police for help, who arranged for the ambulance to take her son to the hospital. He received treatment for his minor injuries, but Lu is now seeking $145 in compensation to cover medical and transport fees.

Another Child Hurt: A Warning for All

In a separate incident, an 8-year-old girl in Bukit Batok suffered severe injuries to her eye after being knocked down by a delivery driver while riding her bicycle. Her mother, Sathiya, was walking with a friend to pick up their daughters when she heard a loud 'thud.' Turning around, she saw her daughter thrown several metres away from the impact.
The delivery driver was left shaken, with his glasses shattered and glass fragments embedded in his eyes. Sathiya’s heart sank as she rushed to her daughter’s side. The girl underwent two surgeries to save her eye, highlighting the urgent need for better road safety awareness.
