Long Queues at the Causeway: A Frustrating Return to Normalcy

Since the Causeway reopened four months ago, it’s been bustling with activity, almost like the good old days before the pandemic. While many are thrilled to reunite with family or enjoy day trips, there's a major hiccup: the long, winding queues at customs.
Take Mitsueki Ademaro, for instance. She found herself stuck at the Malaysian Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ Complex) for over five hours! Her TikTok video, which captured her ordeal, went viral with over 352,000 views and 510 comments. She arrived at CIQ around 11:30 am and only managed to clear immigration after 5:30 pm. Talk about a long wait!
Ademaro described it as the "longest immigration line ever." She even joked about hearing voices while trying to catch some sleep on the ground. As the hours dragged on, she and her friends resorted to a picnic-style snack session, munching on biscuits to stave off hunger. By the time she finally got through customs, she had read an entire book!
In her video, she highlighted another queue at 4:45 pm, expressing disbelief that they survived such a wait. Many netizens were equally shocked by the lengthy lines, with some quipping that one could fly to Hong Kong in that time—about four hours! Others shared their own frustrating experiences, with one person claiming it took them seven hours to clear customs.
Even on Sunday, August 28, the situation didn’t improve. TikTok user Qtmin1308 shared her struggles returning to Singapore, capturing the chaos at the immigration counters. She noted that traffic heading north was backed up for over a quarter of a mile!
Maxx_kumar also posted a video showing a bus bay packed with travellers. This isn’t the first time the border has seen such congestion; the Woodlands Checkpoint was similarly jammed during the Good Friday weekend in April. Police had to step in to help manage the crowd.
One driver shared his own nightmare, getting stuck in traffic for seven hours just to get home. He spent three hours at the Second Link, even joking about having putumayam under his bonnet!

Time for a Solution

Clearly, the long queues are a problem that needs addressing. Here are a few suggestions to help ease the situation:
1. **Improve Queue Management Systems**: Upgrading or installing new systems could significantly reduce waiting times for everyone.
2. **Hire More Staff**: Increasing the number of personnel at customs can help speed up the process.
3. **Educate the Public on Queue Etiquette**: Ensuring everyone understands proper queue behaviour can help prevent unnecessary delays.
With these changes, we can hope for smoother travels at the Causeway, making the journey back home a lot more pleasant for everyone!
