Life Underwater: A Glimpse into Singapore’s Submarine Service
Imagine living in a space where the sun never shines and the closest window is miles away. Sounds challenging, right? For Lieutenant Colonel Phang Chun Chieh of the Singapore Navy, this is everyday life aboard the new Invincible-class submarines. Recently, he shared his experiences with AsiaOne, shedding light on what it truly means to be a submariner.
A Day in the Life of a Submariner
LTC Phang explained that life underwater is not as glamorous as it may seem. Submariners live in tight quarters, with no windows to tell them if it’s day or night. The only way to keep track of time is through the artificial lighting inside the vessel. To join this elite crew, candidates must pass rigorous mental and physical assessments, ensuring they can handle the unique challenges of submarine life.
For the past 18 months, LTC Phang has been training his crew in Germany to operate the Invincible-class submarines. As the commanding officer-designate of the Impeccable, he oversees training both at sea and on land.
Training Through Challenges
The journey hasn’t been easy. The Covid-19 pandemic forced LTC Phang and his team to accelerate their training schedule. He described the experience as intense and fast-paced, with support from German shipyards and manufacturers providing essential equipment training. The crew also engaged in combat and simulator training at the German Navy Submarine Training Centre.
LTC Phang noted the camaraderie built with skilled German submariners, who generously shared their expertise. This collaboration not only enhanced their training but also forged lasting friendships.
Family Sacrifices and Longing
Being away from home for 18 months is no small feat. LTC Phang often finds himself gazing out of airport windows, watching planes take off, and longing for the embrace of his loved ones. His deployment meant missing precious moments with his family, including time with his eight-year-old twin brothers back in Singapore.
He expressed gratitude towards his wife, who has been a pillar of support, managing everything at home. “It definitely helps take the load off me,” he said, allowing him to focus on his duties. To stay connected, he dedicates weekends to video calls with his family, ensuring they celebrate important milestones together, even from afar.
A Special Reunion
The recent launch ceremony in Germany marked a significant moment for LTC Phang and his family. It was a heartwarming reunion, albeit brief, as they came together to witness the launch of the Impeccable and Illustrious submarines at ThyssenKrupp’s headquarters in Kiel. The event was officiated by Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Germany’s Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen.
The Invincible-class submarines are equipped with advanced features like an X-shaped stern rudder for precise maneuvers and fuel cell propulsion systems, custom-designed for Singapore’s needs. After completing their sea trials, these submarines will soon be operational, enhancing Singapore’s naval capabilities.
Strengthening Singapore’s Defence
This development is not just a win for the Singapore Navy; it’s a positive sign for all Singaporeans. The continued investment in our defence capabilities ensures the safety and security of our nation. As LTC Phang and his crew prepare to take on new challenges, we can all take pride in knowing that our defence is in capable hands.
