New Sembawang Hawker Centre hawker centres lament loss of 30-cent takeaway packaging

New Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre Sparks Mixed Reactions Over Eco-Friendly Packaging Costs

The recently opened Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre is making waves, but not all the attention is positive. Just five days into its debut, customers and stall owners are grappling with the new rules surrounding takeaway packaging. One customer was taken aback when they discovered a Korean stall was charging 80 cents for a take-out container.

High Costs for Eco-Friendly Packaging

As part of its green initiatives, the Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre mandates the use of environmentally-friendly takeaway packaging. However, this has led to some unexpected challenges for hawkers. According to the Canopy Hawkers Group, the cost of takeaway packaging is capped at 30 cents. Unfortunately, this limit is impacting stallholders, who are struggling to manage the costs associated with these eco-friendly options.

Wu, the owner of the Korean stall, shared that he pays around 50 cents for each pack of eco-friendly containers. With additional costs like GST and eco-friendly plastic bags, a typical takeout order can quickly add up to nearly $1. Wu initially charged customers 80 cents for take-out, but now finds himself facing losses of nearly $100 a day, or about $3,000 a month. He mentioned that management is aware of the issue and plans to discuss better options soon.

Other Stall Owners Share Their Struggles

Wu isn’t alone in feeling the financial strain. Liu, who runs a Japanese rice bowl stall, revealed that her eco-friendly packaging costs 60 cents per set. With the initial price cap set at 50 cents, she has had to increase her takeout charge from 50 cents to 30 cents, which only covers half of her costs. Liu expressed her frustration, noting that management is working to find suppliers that offer lower prices.

The Canopy Hawkers Group has also made it mandatory for hawkers to use these containers, while encouraging customers to bring their own reusable options. Customers ordering take-out at the hawker centre will not be able to use disposable cutlery or utensils, promoting a more sustainable dining experience.

Community Focus and Environmental Benefits

Despite the challenges faced by hawkers, the Canopy Hawkers Group aims to create a vibrant community hub at the Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre, complete with plans for a “night market.” This initiative aligns with their goal of promoting green practices and reducing plastic waste.

Tan from the group shared that they are working closely with vendors to minimize the use of disposable items. The library at the hawker centre will also encourage patrons to opt for take-out orders using reusable containers.

Positive Environmental Impact

While the new rules may be causing some discomfort for hawkers, they are a step towards a greener future. By reducing the reliance on plastic bags and disposable items, the initiative aims to cut down on plastic waste significantly.

In conclusion, while the Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre’s eco-friendly measures are commendable, the impact on stall owners raises important questions about balancing sustainability with business viability. How do you feel about these changes? Will they encourage you to support local hawkers even more?

Positive Environmental Change Amid Diverse Perspectives

Recent changes in regulations present a promising opportunity for environmental improvement. While the new rules aim to minimize plastic waste by prohibiting hawkers from using plastic bags for food packaging, it has sparked mixed feelings among some vendors. Understanding the broader impact of these changes can foster a more inclusive dialogue about sustainable practices.

This shift towards eco-friendliness encourages us to explore innovative alternatives to plastic packaging, opening avenues for collaboration between hawkers, consumers, and environmental advocates to create a cleaner, greener community.
