Christmas Cheer Lights Up Tiong Bahru
The festive spirit is alive and well in Tiong Bahru, and residents are eager to share their joy with everyone! This charming neighbourhood is turning into a holiday wonderland, with homes adorned in delightful decorations that capture the essence of Christmas.
Festive Decorations Galore
According to 8World, many households in Tiong Bahru have embraced the holiday spirit by decking out their exteriors. From classic mistletoes and pine cones to playful Santa Claus stickers and Christmas socks, the neighbourhood is buzzing with cheer. Passersby can’t help but smile as they stroll through this festive scene.
Mr. Martin Williams, a long-time Singaporean resident, shared his inspiration for this holiday initiative. After hearing from his sister in the UK about her community’s Christmas decorating efforts, he thought, “Why not Tiong Bahru?” With a vision to spread joy, he created signs to encourage participation along popular streets like Tiong Bahru Road and Kim Pong Road.
Community Participation
Williams took to social media, inviting neighbours to join the fun by posting in a Facebook group. By the end of October, about 20 residents expressed interest in decorating their homes. “It feels great to be part of something special with the community,” he said. Many have already put up decorations, and locals enjoy walking through the beautifully adorned streets.
Jil, a long-time resident from the Philippines, also joined the festive efforts. She estimated spending about $100 on her decorations and expressed her happiness in seeing others participate. “It’s wonderful to share this joy with everyone,” Jil remarked.
Connecting Through Christmas
Williams reached out to friends from around the world, inviting Charlotte from France and Pedro from Ecuador to join the decorating campaign. Pedro, along with his fellow students, shared that being away from family made this community activity even more meaningful. “This is an amazing opportunity to connect,” he said.
Unfortunately, Williams had to cancel a planned gathering due to a Covid-19 infection, but he remains hopeful for a post-Christmas meet-up, perhaps over some wine, to deepen friendships.
