As the year-end bonus season approaches, many Singaporeans are contemplating their next career move. With economic uncertainties and whispers of job cuts in the air, a recent survey by AsiaOne has revealed some eye-opening insights.

Between November 3 and 25, AsiaOne surveyed 1,123 Singaporeans to gauge their feelings about job security and potential career changes. The results were telling: a whopping 74% of respondents are considering exploring new job opportunities after receiving their bonuses. However, only 8% are actively looking for new roles.

Interestingly, just 2.3% of participants reported that they have already secured their next position. This raises the question: what drives Singaporeans to switch jobs?

What Motivates Job Changes?

When asked about their motivations for seeking new employment, participants highlighted several key factors:

– **Work-Life Balance:** A significant 43% of non-university graduates are prioritising better work-life balance over salary.
– **Compensation and Benefits:** While 38.2% of university graduates are focused on improved compensation, 46% overall cited better benefits as a major reason for leaving their current jobs.

These findings suggest that for many, it’s not just about the paycheck; quality of life and job satisfaction are equally, if not more, important.

Optimism in the Job Market

The survey also explored how optimistic Singaporeans feel about the job market. Surprisingly, only 2.3% believe there are plenty of job opportunities available. However, non-university graduates showed slightly more optimism compared to their university-educated counterparts, with 38.6% feeling hopeful about job prospects.

Lennert Yang, an IT manager, shared his perspective, stating that there are indeed many opportunities in the IT sector, particularly for those with skills in service delivery and project management. He noted that the pandemic has reshaped the industry, leading to increased demand for tech roles that support remote work.

Sector-Specific Outlooks

The survey results also revealed a disparity in outlooks across different sectors. For instance, over half of the respondents in the accommodation and food service industry expressed optimism about future job prospects. In contrast, those in transportation and storage were more pessimistic, with many considering a job switch.

Edmund Chua from AsiaOne’s Consumer Insights and Analytics Office suggested that this optimism in certain sectors could be attributed to a shortage of skilled labour, prompting more job postings in the F&B industry.
