Beware of Crows: Shocking Attacks in Bishan
Last Sunday morning, a Bishan resident had a terrifying encounter that left her shaken. While waiting to hire a vehicle near her HDB block, she was unexpectedly attacked by a crow in broad daylight. This incident, which occurred around 7.30 am, has sparked concern among locals.
The Unprovoked Attack
Ng, a 74-year-old woman, described the crow as large and aggressive. As she stood in the parking lot, the bird swooped down and landed on her face, using its beak to sharpen itself on her forehead. Although Ng was not injured, the shock of the attack has left her worried about the safety of others in the area, especially children and the elderly.
This isn’t an isolated incident. Just a day later, on February 13, Ng faced a similar attack in the same location. Other residents have also reported being targeted by crows, with one witness noting that 10 people were attacked within just 20 minutes.
Community Concerns
Residents of Block 110 Bishan Street 12 are understandably alarmed. Leong, a long-time resident, shared that he has seen the area evolve from a quiet town to a bustling hub. He expressed his frustration, saying, “What can we do? It’s impossible to avoid them.”
Another victim of the attacks shared a more empathetic view, stating that the crows are merely protecting their territory. “If you were a parent, what would you do for your children?” he asked, showing understanding of the birds’ behaviour.
Authorities Take Action
In response to the rising number of crow attacks, the National Parks Board (NParks) is working with the Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council to address the issue. They are currently checking for nests around Block 110 and plan to trim nearby trees and humanely trap the crows. Dr. Adrian Loo from NParks explained that crows can become aggressive, especially if they feel their young are threatened.
To help mitigate the situation, NParks advises the public to avoid feeding the birds and to dispose of food scraps properly. Signs have been put up around the area to remind residents not to feed the crows.
What You Can Do
If you find yourself in a situation where a crow is attacking, it’s important to stay calm. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
– **Stay Still**: Avoid sudden movements that might provoke the bird further.
– **Assess the Situation**: Try to understand why the crow is acting aggressively. Are there chicks nearby?
– **Walk Away Slowly**: If possible, back away slowly from the area.
Ng believes that more proactive measures should be taken by the authorities, suggesting that clearer signs be placed near known crow hotspots to warn residents.
As we continue to enjoy the beauty of nature in Singapore, it’s essential to remain vigilant and respectful of the wildlife around us. For more information on how to coexist with our feathered friends, visit NParks.
Stay safe, Bishan residents!
