Valentine’s Day Budget 2023: Key Announcements That Matter to You

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong delivered a significant speech on Valentine’s Day 2023, addressing pressing issues that many Singaporeans are facing today. With global inflation on the rise and HDB flat prices climbing, it’s crucial to understand how these changes will impact your daily life. Here are the top seven announcements from the Budget that you should know about.

1. Cost-of-Living Payments for All Eligible Singaporeans

To help ease the burden of rising costs, the government is rolling out Cost-of-Living payments for Singaporeans aged 21 and above. These payments will be based on your 2022 assessable income, with amounts ranging from $200 to $400. This initiative is set to benefit around 2.5 million Singaporeans in June 2023.

2. Community Development Council (CDC) Vouchers

Every Singaporean household will receive $300 worth of CDC vouchers in January 2024. These vouchers can be used at wet markets, hawker centres, and food outlets, making it easier for families to manage their grocery bills and enjoy local delights.

3. Increased GST Vouchers for Low-Income Households

Adult Singaporeans earning $34,000 or less annually will see an increase in their GST vouchers under the Assurance Package. Homeowners with properties valued between $13,000 and $26,000 will receive $700 in 2023 and $850 in 2024. Those with homes valued below $13,000 will get $700, up from $500 last year.

4. Enhanced Support for Seniors

Seniors aged 55 and above with no property or income exceeding $22,000 will receive cash payments ranging from $200 to $300. This support is part of a broader initiative to help our elderly population cope with rising living costs.

5. CPF Contribution Ceiling Increase

The monthly CPF contribution ceiling will rise from $6,000 to $8,000 by 2026. This change allows both employers and employees to contribute more towards their retirement savings, reflecting the increase in wages for Singaporeans.

6. Support for First-Time Home Buyers

If you’re a first-time home buyer, there’s good news! The maximum CPF Housing Grants for resale flats have increased by up to $30,000. Households earning $14,000 or less can now receive grants of up to $80,000 for four-room resale flats and up to $50,000 for five-room flats or more.

7. New Initiatives for Families with Young Children

The Baby Bonus Cash Gift has been raised by $3,000, increasing the amount parents receive for their first and second children to $11,000 each. For the third child, parents will now receive $13,000. Additionally, paternity leave has been doubled from two to four weeks, providing fathers with more time to bond with their newborns.

Conclusion: A Budget for All Singaporeans

This year’s Budget aims to support Singaporeans through various initiatives that address the rising cost of living. From cash payments and vouchers to increased support for families and seniors, these measures reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind.
