Remote Control: A robot is used by a man in the Philippines to purchase bubble tea from Singapore

Singaporean Innovation: Ordering Bubble Tea with a Robot

Imagine ordering your favourite bubble tea without even leaving your home! A recent viral TikTok video showcases a man from the Philippines who did just that, using a robot in Singapore to pick up his drink from HeyTea at The Shoppes Marina Bay Sands. This exciting blend of technology and convenience has certainly captured the attention of many.

The Robot’s Journey

In the video posted by TikTok user FrodoBots, viewers watched as the remote-controlled robot wheeled its way to the mall’s automated doors. However, it faced its first challenge when it struggled to detect the entrance. Cleverly, the robot managed to sneak in by following another shopper.

Once inside, it made its way to the bubble tea counter but soon encountered another hiccup. Despite the operator trying to get the staff’s attention through the robot’s speaker, they didn’t notice at first. Thankfully, a kind stranger stepped in, asking the staff about the order and relaying the request for a roasted brown bobo.

Cashless Payments and Teamwork

While the technology was impressive, cashless payments weren’t an option for the robot. Another customer had to pass cash to the robot, which waited patiently as the transaction occurred. After confirming the order, the helpful customer left with their drink, sharing the queue number, 266, with the robot. Finally, the robot received its basket with the roasted brown bobo and set off on its way home, completing its mission.

Viral Fame and Future Potential

Since the video was posted, it has garnered over 140,000 views, showcasing the potential of robots in everyday tasks. This isn’t FrodoBot’s first venture; just days earlier, it was seen purchasing a chocolate bar at a local shop. HeyTea even chimed in, calling the robot “very cool.”

However, there are limitations. A spokesperson mentioned that these robots currently cannot navigate from point A to B independently, climb stairs, or press buttons to access higher floors.

Robots in Everyday Life

Interestingly, this isn’t the first instance of robots running errands in Singapore. Last year, a 35-year-old man used a remote-controlled toy car to order dinner from a zi char stall, highlighting the convenience of such technology, especially during the pandemic.

As we embrace these technological advancements, it’s exciting to see how they can simplify our daily lives. Whether it’s grocery shopping or picking up a drink, robots are paving the way for a more convenient future.
