However, her adventure took a painful twist when she felt a sharp sting on her right arm. After returning to the boat, she discovered a swollen patch of skin measuring about 7cm, much to her dismay. Thankfully, there was no bleeding, but the incident did put a damper on her snorkelling experience.
Witnesses reported seeing Liang in discomfort, and several fellow tourists even offered her medicated oil to ease the pain. The staff at Redang Island, who have years of experience, were surprised to hear about her encounter, noting they had never seen a tourist bitten by a turtle before. They had repeatedly warned visitors to “see and not touch” the turtles, leaving Liang puzzled about how the bite occurred.
Despite this unsettling experience, Liang remains undeterred. She plans to continue snorkelling, though she’s decided to keep her distance from sea turtles in the future. A spokesperson from the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres) explained that sea turtles may bite if they feel threatened, especially with the increasing number of tourists in their habitat. They urged everyone to respect these creatures and give them space.
Interestingly, Redang Island is home to a significant population of sea turtles, with around 2,000 nests reported annually, according to the World Wildlife Fund Malaysia. While Liang’s experience was unfortunate, it serves as a reminder for all snorkellers to be cautious and respectful of marine life.
