Chinatown Bustles as Chinese New Year Approaches
As Chinese New Year draws near, Chinatown is buzzing with excitement, and Singaporeans are flocking to the area in droves. Just last Saturday night, Upper Cross Street was a hive of activity, but not everyone was having a good time. Around 100 drivers found themselves stuck in a multi-storey car park for a frustrating three hours.
Stuck in the Garage
One of the drivers, Hong, shared his experience with Shin Min Daily News. He had just left his parking spot on the sixth floor after a day of shopping with his granddaughter. “It was a Saturday, and the place was packed with cars,” he recalled. After waiting for a while, he decided it was time to head downstairs.
Unfortunately, the gantry barriers at the ground floor exit had malfunctioned, trapping him and many others inside. Frustrated, Hong honked his horn for nearly two hours, hoping for a resolution. “It felt like waiting to clear customs at Johor Bahru,” he remarked, highlighting the shared exasperation among the drivers.
Long Waits and Frayed Nerves
The gantry barriers finally started working again at 11:10 PM, but not before Hong and the others had endured a long wait. His granddaughter arrived home at 11:30 PM, three hours after they had initially planned to leave.
In another incident, a parking dispute at Beauty World Centre led to a 20-minute gridlock at a popular restaurant. Witnesses reported that two drivers, one male and one female, got out of their cars and began arguing, adding to the congestion.
Patience is Key
While it’s common to see large crowds during the festive season, it’s important for drivers to be considerate and patient. With the New Year just around the corner, let’s remember to keep our cool on the roads. After all, the festive spirit is about joy and togetherness, not frustration.
