Race Day with a Royal Twist: Prince William Joins Dragon Boat Team in Singapore
It’s not every day you get to paddle alongside a British royal! A group of 19 enthusiastic paddlers had the unique chance to race with Prince William, who touched down in Singapore yesterday. This morning, the Prince of Wales joined the British Dragons Boat Racing Team for an exciting training session at Marina Reservoir.
Victory on the Water
Dressed casually in a white polo tee and black cap, Prince William took his place in the middle of the boat. His team didn’t just participate; they emerged victorious! After the race, the paddlers praised him for being a “natural,” noting how he “didn’t miss a stroke.” With a humble smile, he credited his success to following the lead of his boat captain, Chris Bosher.
Bosher shared that the Prince was “super engaged” throughout the session. Interestingly, this wasn’t Prince William’s first experience with dragon boating. He mentioned having paddled before during his school days and while in Canada. Kirthana Lakshman, the crew’s treasurer, remarked on his competitive spirit, saying, “It’s clear he did his homework. He knew he was part of the engines, which is the critical part of the boat.” Right after their win, Prince William exclaimed, “Oh, we won by miles!”
A Refreshing Break
The atmosphere was filled with excitement as the team celebrated their victory. Prince William expressed his enjoyment of the sports activity, saying it was a refreshing break from his usual engagements. Bosher noted, “He loves engaging in sports activities, so this was right up his alley.” The team felt it was a “real honor” to race alongside His Highness.
This dragon boat race is part of Prince William’s visit to Singapore for the third annual Earthshot Prize ceremony, scheduled for November 7. The event aims to highlight individuals, groups, and businesses making significant contributions to solving some of the world’s biggest challenges.
Strengthening Ties
Today, the Prince will meet with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana. This visit marks his second trip to Singapore, following an official visit in 2012 with his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales.
The benefits of Prince William’s visit to Singapore are significant. Firstly, it strengthens the ties between the United Kingdom and Singapore. Secondly, it enhances Singapore’s international profile. As a high-profile figure, his presence is likely to attract positive media attention, improving the country’s image and potentially drawing in more tourists and investments.
