Jurong East Cafe Charges Extra for Takeaway Lid, Sparks Online Outrage
A recent incident at a cafe in Jurong East has stirred up quite a conversation online. Koh Shu Zhen, a 34-year-old customer, was taken aback when she discovered a surprise 10-cent charge for a “takeaway lid” for her hot drink. This unexpected fee left her feeling frustrated, especially since the cashier did not mention it when she ordered.
What Happened at the Cafe
Koh and her friend visited Coffeeman cafe at the Devan Nair Institute on November 6, around 3:20 PM. They ordered two cups of teh, and according to CCTV footage, the cashier asked if they wanted to “cover” their drinks. However, this phrasing led to confusion, as it did not clarify that there would be an additional charge for the lid.
“I felt cheated and angry because the cashier only asked me if I wanted a cover and did not mention any charges,” Koh expressed in her post on the Facebook page Complaint Singapore. She highlighted that even larger chains like Ya Kun Kaya Toast do not impose such fees for a lid.
Consumer Rights and Misleading Practices
Koh’s main concern isn’t just the 10 cents, but the misleading nature of the transaction. She noted that all drinks at the cafe were served in takeaway cups. After enjoying their drinks, she noticed the extra charge only when her friend checked the receipt. Although they had already consumed their beverages, Koh felt compelled to voice her dissatisfaction.
The receipt indicated a 10-cent charge for one takeaway lid, but the cashier later clarified that both drinks were capped. She mentioned that if the staff had known about the charge, they would have refused the lid.
Public Reaction: Fair or Unfair?
This incident has sparked a debate among Singaporeans. Some feel it’s unfair to be charged for something as simple as a cup lid, while others argue that it’s a reasonable fee for a necessary item that prevents spills.
