Money changers struggle to keep up as Korean won hits new low against Singapore dollar, allowing customers to buy up to $5,000 in one transaction

Cherry Blossoms Await: A Perfect Time for Singaporeans to Visit South Korea

With cherry blossom season in full swing, many Singaporeans are gearing up for a trip to South Korea. The excitement is even greater now that the South Korean won has dipped to a 10-year low against the Singapore dollar. This means more bang for your buck when exploring the beautiful sights of Korea!

Exchange Rates on the Rise

As of last Friday (April 12) at 5:30 PM, the exchange rate for the won was 1018.16. Just a few days later, it improved slightly to 1016.07. This favorable rate has led to a surge in demand at local money changers. Many are noticing an increase in customers eager to buy Korean won, often in larger amounts.

The owner of Fiat Money Changer at The Arcade in Raffles Place shared that he’s seen a significant uptick in transactions. “Depending on the day, we can sell out by 3 PM or 4 PM,” he noted, highlighting that customers are exchanging higher sums than usual.

Similarly, Habib Mohamed, manager at Faizam Forex, also located at The Arcade, reported a 10 to 50 percent increase in customers looking to exchange their currency. He mentioned running out of won by the afternoon, even after restocking in the morning.

Over at Rosemin Store Money Changer at Jurong East Bus Interchange, while the owner hasn’t seen a dramatic rise in new customers, regulars have been changing more won than before, with some purchasing up to $5,000 in one go.

Seize the Opportunity to Explore

This is a fantastic opportunity for Singaporeans to take advantage of the favorable exchange rate. Not only can you enjoy the breathtaking cherry blossoms, but you can also stretch your dollar further while discovering the rich culture and delicious food of South Korea.
