During a recent visit to the McDonald’s Ridout Tea Garden outlet in Queensway, Rumiyati shared how these flexible arrangements have allowed her to pursue further education. She successfully completed a 10-month SkillsFuture-certified diploma in retail while working full-time. “I spoke to my boss, and he agreed. I worked from 9 am to 5 pm and attended classes from 6 pm to 10 pm,” she explained.

In emergencies, Rumiyati can easily swap shifts with a colleague by approaching her restaurant manager. This flexibility helps her manage family responsibilities while continuing to upskill.

New Guidelines for Everyone

Starting December 1, new tripartite guidelines will allow all employees in Singapore to formally request flexible work arrangements from their employers. Minister of State for Manpower Gan Siow Huang introduced these guidelines, which aim to simplify the process for employees who have completed their probation period.
