Meet the Supermom Juggling Caregiving for 4 Kids, a Cancer-Stricken Grandma, and a Dad with Dementia

Juggling Life: The Inspiring Story of Koh Mei Ting

At just 35, Koh Mei Ting is a true superhero in her own right. Balancing a full-time job as an administrative manager, she’s also a devoted mother of four and a caregiver to her grandmother battling cancer, as well as her father who has vascular dementia. In a recent video interview with the Tzu-Chi Foundation, Koh opened up about her daily struggles and triumphs in managing her many responsibilities.

Caregiving Amidst Challenges

Koh’s journey took a challenging turn two years ago when her grandmother was diagnosed with skin cancer. Although the cancer cells were removed, a recent relapse has left her grandmother with painful wounds that require constant care. Koh has to clean these wounds and apply soothing lotion daily to prevent bleeding.

Her grandmother, who relies on a walking aid, is hesitant to visit the hospital. Thankfully, the dedicated medical staff from the Tzu-Chi Foundation make regular visits to provide support.

Koh also takes an active role in caring for her father. To keep his mind sharp and slow the progression of his condition, she engages him in simple math exercises. Additionally, she has encouraged him to download a tracking app on his phone, allowing her to monitor his whereabouts during his daily walks. “If they know his whereabouts, they’re not so worried about him getting lost,” Koh explained. “It’s important to give him some freedom because he can’t be confined forever.”

Family Support: A Team Effort

Evenings in Koh’s household are bustling. With her youngest child being just five years old and her third child preparing for the PSLE, Koh’s plate is always full. When asked about her hectic evenings, she simply nods, stating, “Every day’s the same.”

Koh’s eldest daughter, Sapphire, steps in to help by picking up her younger siblings from school whenever she can. Before tucking her grandmother into bed, Koh ensures her wounds are clean and properly cared for. “I have to be extra careful not to cause any bleeding,” she said, highlighting the delicate nature of her grandmother’s skin.

After her grandmother is settled for the night, Koh returns home with her children. Each morning, she rises at 5 am to check on her grandmother before heading to work, showcasing her unwavering dedication.

Finding Joy in Caregiving

Koh never imagined she would take on the role of a caregiver for her family. “I thought I would only need to care for my children,” she admitted. Despite the physical and emotional toll, she finds immense joy in seeing her family members happy.

On weekends, her younger sister, Mei Qi, joins in to help out, emphasizing the importance of family support. “We all have to play a part; otherwise, it’s too taxing for one person,” Koh remarked. Her husband also pitches in by taking time off work to accompany her father to medical appointments. “He believes it’s a family affair,” she said, appreciating the moral and emotional support from her loved ones.

Koh feels a deep sense of duty to care for her grandmother, who played a significant role in raising her and her siblings. “She was like a second mum to us,” Koh reflected.
