For months, bags filled with urine and rubbish have been carelessly tossed from a flat above Ping Min Medical Hall, a traditional Chinese medicine shop run by the Tay family. Sharyn Tay, 24, shared her family’s distressing experience with the media recently, revealing that this unsightly issue has been ongoing since April.
Weekly Nuisance
Imagine stepping out of your HDB flat only to find bags of waste landing at your feet. That’s the reality for the Tay family, who often find these bags bursting open, spilling their foul contents right outside their store on Sago Lane. This happens about once or twice a week, sometimes even on consecutive days. The mess includes not just urine but also tissues, food wrappers, and the occasional orange peel.
The situation has become so dire that their store’s display and waste bin have been targeted, and the awning has even suffered damage. To make matters worse, passers-by at the nearby pavilion have been splashed with the unpleasant liquid, especially during the sweltering Singapore heat.
Community Impact
Despite the ongoing littering, the Tay family has managed to keep their business afloat, relying mainly on loyal customers and supportive neighbours. However, the foul smell has made it difficult for them to showcase their products outside. They have reported this issue over 20 times through the OneService app and have sought help from local MP Josephine Teo. They even filed a police report online.
After installing a surveillance camera for two weeks, they found no evidence of littering. However, the problem resumed as soon as the camera was taken down. The National Environment Agency (NEA) has stepped in, issuing advisories and conducting inspections to tackle the high-rise littering issue.

Despite NEA’s efforts, the littering continues. The Tay family is now considering installing their own surveillance cameras to catch the culprit in the act. The NEA has been proactive in addressing high-rise littering, enforcing fines and corrective work orders against offenders. Residents should be aware that repeat offenders can face fines of up to $10,000!
