Singapore Sends Massive Aid Shipment to Gaza to Combat Hunger Crisis

Singapore Steps Up to Aid Gaza: A Compassionate Response to the Hunger Crisis

Singapore is taking significant action to address the hunger crisis in Gaza by sending 1,000 tonnes of white rice and 300 tonnes of canned sardines. This shipment marks the fourth round of aid from Singapore, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The supplies will first be transported from Singapore to Cyprus before reaching Gaza.

Ongoing Support Since the Conflict Began

Since the conflict escalated on October 7, 2023, Singapore has generously contributed over $17 million in cash and in-kind donations to support humanitarian efforts in the region. The most recent aid package, delivered in March, included 20 tonnes of essential food and supplies. This delivery involved two Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) aircraft and 69 personnel who flew directly to Gaza.

During a handover ceremony on July 22, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan expressed deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza. He reaffirmed Singapore’s commitment to alleviating the suffering of those affected and called for a ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need.

Singapore’s Position on the Conflict

Dr. Balakrishnan also highlighted the importance of finding a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He reiterated Singapore’s stance that Israel’s settlements in the West Bank are illegal under international law and emphasized the nation’s support for UN resolutions that reject these settlements. Furthermore, Singapore is reviewing the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion on the matter.

The Minister urged both parties to resume negotiations aimed at achieving a two-state solution, in line with UN Security Council resolutions. Singapore remains dedicated to assisting the Palestinian Authority during this challenging period.

How Can Singaporeans Show Compassion?
