Unexpected Costs for EV Users: A Lesson Learned
One Singaporean woman’s experience at Jewel Changi Airport serves as a reminder for all electric vehicle (EV) users to be mindful of their charging habits. Cheryl Tay, a 37-year-old content creator with over 68,000 Instagram followers, was taken aback when she discovered a $20 “idle fee” after leaving her test-driven BMW plugged in for too long.
The Costly Oversight
Cheryl shared her surprise in a video on July 14, explaining that she doesn’t own an EV. After plugging in the car at a charging station, she returned over two hours later, forgetting about the vehicle charging. “I was at least an hour late to pick it up,” she admitted. Upon checking the charging app, she noticed a notification about an “idle fee” of 50 cents per minute. Confused and rushed for an appointment, she didn’t have time to investigate further.
Understanding the Idle Fee
The charging stations at Jewel Changi Airport are operated by SP Mobility, a subsidiary of SP Group. Since December, drivers have been charged this idle fee if they leave their vehicles plugged in for more than 30 minutes after charging is complete. This policy, which caps the fee at $20, is in place at Changi Airport and 45 other locations daily from 7 am to 10:30 pm, except for petrol kiosks where it applies all day.
Dean Cher, head of mobility solutions at SP Group, explained that the idle fee aims to prevent drivers from hogging charging points, thereby reducing waiting times and improving the overall charging experience for everyone. Other providers, like Charge+, are also considering similar policies to encourage responsible usage.
A Valuable Lesson
Despite her surprise at the fee, Cheryl acknowledged the importance of such measures. “Itβs a good way to prevent users from monopolizing charging points,” she reflected. Although she didn’t fully understand the fee notification, she accepted the fine as a lesson learned.
This incident underscores the need for greater awareness among EV users regarding responsible charging habits. As the EV landscape grows in Singapore, it’s essential for drivers to be considerate of shared resources.
Promoting Responsible Charging Habits
To enhance awareness, campaigns, workshops, and online resources could help educate EV users on the importance of time management when using public charging stations. Clear guidelines and policies can also foster a more efficient and considerate charging environment.
How can we better inform EV users about responsible charging habits and the significance of being mindful of time at charging stations? It’s a question worth considering as we navigate the evolving world of electric vehicles in Singapore.

Promoting Responsible Charging Habits for a Sustainable Future
This news underscores the significance of being considerate of time when utilizing public resources such as EV charging stations. It presents an opportunity for EV users to adopt responsible charging practices, fostering a more efficient and respectful charging atmosphere for everyone involved. Enhancing education and awareness among EV users regarding responsible charging habits can be achieved through community campaigns, workshops, and online resources, emphasizing the value of mindfulness in resource usage. Additionally, establishing clear guidelines or policies for charging station utilization can further encourage a cooperative and efficient environment for all users.
By understanding the importance of responsible charging, we can collectively enhance the experience for all EV users. Initiatives like educational campaigns and clear usage guidelines not only benefit individual users but also contribute to a more sustainable and considerate community.
