Surprise Booking Fees: Are You Paying More Than You Should for Your Taxi Ride?

Have you ever hopped into a taxi only to be hit with unexpected charges? One rider recently experienced just that and was left in shock after seeing a $10 booking fee on his receipt!
Ivan, a contributor to Stomp, booked a GoTaxi from Suntec City using the Gojek App on August 20th at around 10.30pm. He was looking forward to a late-night meal when he was assigned a Prime Taxi driver in a Toyota Camry Hybrid. The total fare for his ride came to $44, but that wasn’t all.
The hefty price tag included a peak hour surcharge and a city surcharge. What really irked Ivan was the $10 booking fee for the Toyota Camry during peak hours, which he discovered on the Prime Taxi website. He felt it was unfair that this wasn’t clearly shown on the app when he booked his ride. Instead, he only saw a $3 booking fee listed.
When Ivan reached out to Gojek about the issue, they explained that GoTaxi orders can be allocated to either premium or non-premium taxis. This means that riders might not always know what type of taxi they’re getting. Gojek also mentioned that riders have the option to cancel their orders if they’re not happy. However, Ivan is now wary of booking taxis through GoTaxi or other third-party apps, especially since Gojek charges a $0.50 platform fee.
Interestingly, Gojek allows passengers to choose their preferred taxi type, which could help avoid these surprise fees.

What Can Be Done?

The current situation raises a crucial question: How can companies improve transparency for riders?
– **Clear Pricing:** Companies should ensure that all fees, including booking charges, are clearly displayed in the app at the time of booking.
– **Consider Fee Adjustments:** It might also be worth considering reducing or waiving booking fees during peak hours to create a fairer experience for riders.
As Singaporeans, we value transparency and fairness in our everyday transactions, especially when it comes to transport. Let’s hope these companies take note!
