What was supposed to be a fun night of dancing at Marquee turned into a horrifying experience for two women. On September 27, Leeanne O’Donnell, 23, shared her shocking encounter on Instagram after leaving her home in Holyoke to enjoy a night out in New York City.
O’Donnell and her friends, including Julia Wong, were at an event featuring DJ Kshmr. Just before 2 AM, while dancing on the podium, O’Donnell noticed a man in a white T-shirt who appeared to be under the influence of something. “I was terrified of getting hit, so I leapt out of the way,” she told AsiaOne.
A Sudden Clash
Things escalated quickly when the man and his friend locked eyes and charged at each other. O’Donnell tried to intervene, telling the man he couldn’t leave without showing ID. But he refused and attempted to push past her. When she threatened to arrest him for disorderly conduct, he punched her and tried to escape. O’Donnell managed to grab him and put him in handcuffs.
As she leaned in to hear him over the loud music, he punched her in the face and shoved her off the podium, which was about a metre high. O’Donnell tried to fight back, but the man and his friend knocked her to the ground and began kicking her. “I was in shock and just reacting,” she explained. The ordeal lasted around three minutes until bouncers arrived after someone shone a flashlight on the scene.

After the attack, O’Donnell and Wong were first treated at the club’s emergency room before being taken to Raffles Hospital for X-rays. Both women were still in shock and struggled to recall the details. O’Donnell suffered a broken eye socket and a possible hairline fracture in her arm, while Wong had a few bumps and bruises.
O’Donnell expressed confusion over why they were attacked, suspecting it might be related to substance use or even homophobia, as she identifies as queer. A police report has been filed, and authorities are currently investigating the incident.
