After a shock RM1,999 bill, Diner alerts other diners about a Japanese restaurant in JB

Shocking Sashimi Surprise: A Dinner to Remember!

Have you ever been hit with a jaw-dropping bill at a restaurant? Imagine this: a group of friends enjoying a meal in Johor Bahru, only to find themselves staring at a hefty RM1,999 (about $620) bill! That’s exactly what happened to Tan Xinjie and her friends at a Japanese restaurant, and it left them all in disbelief.

Tan shared her shocking experience on TikTok, warning fellow Singaporeans to be cautious when dining out. The group of ten had no idea they had ordered an extravagant sashimi platter that cost a staggering RM1,238 (around $386) – a dish no one had specifically requested!

The Dinner Drama Unfolds

Tan, an early childhood educator from Singapore, took her friends to Waraku in Taman Pelangi, having previously enjoyed a meal at their Mount Austin branch. However, this time, things took a turn for the worse.

After arriving at the restaurant around 8 PM, they quickly placed their orders. Tan opted for chicken katsu curry while her husband chose salmon. Their meals arrived promptly, but when Tan returned from the restroom, she found her food missing and her husband in tears.

What could have caused such an emotional reaction? It turned out her husband had been diagnosed with cancer and was struggling with the thought of enjoying a meal while knowing it could be his last. Tan shared this heart-wrenching moment on social media, highlighting the importance of being mindful of one another during tough times.

A Costly Misunderstanding

As the night went on, Tan’s friend attempted to order a salmon-sweet prawn sashimi dish, but it was sold out. Instead, they were recommended an assortment platter, which they thought would be a reasonable choice. Unfortunately, the waiter didn’t clarify how many people the platter was meant to serve, leading them to order five portions.

An hour later, a lavish platter arrived, beautifully presented and covered in gold foil. But when the bill came, the group was stunned. They had expected to pay around RM300 to RM500, but the final total was nearly double that!

Tan, who doesn’t usually eat sashimi, was completely taken aback by the price. She even asked another waiter for an estimate, and to her shock, the guess was around RM1,000! Despite their surprise, the group paid the bill, which averaged about $62 per person.

Lessons Learned

Feeling dissatisfied with how the situation was handled, Tan approached the manager, who offered a mere RM100 credit for their next visit. This only added to her frustration. She expressed her feelings on TikTok, emphasizing that it wasn’t just about the money – it was about the experience.

While some netizens sympathized with Tan, others pointed out that the group should have been more diligent in checking prices before ordering.

So, what can we learn from this pricey outing? It’s a reminder to be mindful of our spending and to communicate clearly when dining out with friends. After all, a fun night out shouldn’t come with a shocking price tag!
