Delivery Riders Beware: The Hidden Dangers of Loan Sharks
Imagine this: you’re out delivering food, and suddenly, you find yourself caught up in a loan shark’s scheme. That’s exactly what happened to Helmi Amy, a delivery rider who recently shared his shocking experience on Facebook. His story serves as a crucial warning for all delivery riders in Singapore.
Helmi received an order worth a staggering $13.2k for Hawaiian Tropic products and gold items, placed under the name Stafen Ho using a Malaysian number. He was instructed to deliver 10 meals to an HDB flat without being given the exact address. To make matters worse, he was told that Ho’s “wife” would pay in cash upon delivery.
In a surprising turn of events, Helmi ended up giving money to the father of the debtor, insisting that the son should be the one to pay off the debt. He chose not to file a police report, thinking it wasn’t worth the hassle for such a small amount. However, he did reach out to Grab to inform them of the situation and offered to share his experience with fellow riders to prevent similar incidents.
This isn’t an isolated case. Back in April 2020, the police issued a warning about unlicensed moneylenders using food delivery services to intimidate debtors. They would place large orders and send them to the homes of those in debt, sometimes even targeting family members. The police have made it clear that they have zero tolerance for such harassment.
Stay Safe and Informed
So, how can you protect yourself? Here are some tips:
- Be cautious of unusual orders, especially those that seem too good to be true.
- Always verify the identity of the person you’re delivering to.
- If you feel threatened or harassed, don’t hesitate to report it to the police.
The community needs to come together to ensure that no one falls victim to these loan sharks. By staying vigilant and informed, we can help create a safer environment for everyone.
Remember, it’s important not to let these “vultures” disrupt your life. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, reach out for help and report any suspicious activity. Together, we can make a difference!
