Heartbreaking Vacation: A Family’s Tragic Loss in Europe
One family’s dream holiday turned into a nightmare when tragedy struck just days before their return to Singapore. A father, who had set off for a two-week vacation in France and Switzerland on February 16, suffered a cardiac arrest while shopping in Zurich on February 26. His older son, busy with work commitments, couldn’t join the trip.
A Day of Joy Turns to Despair
The family had planned to return home by March 1. Initially, after collapsing, the father was still breathing, and his pulse was detectable. His younger son, Hu, recalled how he held onto the hand of a passerby while closing his eyes. Many bystanders rushed to help, and paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for about 45 minutes. Sadly, his heart stopped beating multiple times during the ordeal.
Despite the doctors’ cautious optimism, he was placed in the Intensive Care Unit with several tubes attached. Hu’s older son quickly flew to Switzerland upon hearing the news, but tragically, his father was already brain dead by the time he arrived. The family had to make the heartbreaking decision to let him go, and he passed away on March 4.
Memories of a Beautiful Journey
The family had invested a lot in this trip, budgeting for activities and hotels every month, and even splurging on business class tickets for a more comfortable flight. The holiday cost a staggering $57,000, but it was meant to be a memorable experience. Hu’s father was deeply touched by the journey, shedding tears of joy throughout their time together.
Reflecting on those moments, Hu’s wife shared how her father kept a journal during the trip, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to explore Europe with his family. “I am grateful for the wonderful experiences we create together,” she said, cherishing the time spent as a family.
