“Are you serious?” After man is seen standing in Sixth Avenue’s parking lot, driver in disbelief.

Parking Woes: The ‘Choping’ Craze in Singapore

Finding a parking spot in Singapore can feel like a mini-adventure, but it often ends in frustration. Imagine this: you spot an open lot, only to discover someone has ‘choped’ it!

The Dashcam Drama

On March 22, a driver named Joepele3 shared a dashcam video on TikTok that perfectly illustrates this issue. While trying to park near Sixth Avenue, he encountered a man in a red T-shirt casually sipping a drink in his car. As Joepele3 attempted to pull into the lot, the man reversed into his path. When confronted, the man nonchalantly replied, “I’m chopeing the lot for my buddy, he is right there,” pointing to a silver car nearby. Joepele3, clearly taken aback, exclaimed, “Are you serious?”

This incident highlights the ongoing struggle drivers face when others try to reserve parking spots without actually being there.

A Familiar Scenario

This isn’t an isolated case. Back in May 2013, a woman attempted to ‘chope’ a parking space at Marina Bay Sands. She parked her car to save the spot, but another driver boldly took it instead. The onlooker’s dashcam footage captured her running after the reversing vehicle, knocking on the driver’s window to assert her claim. She insisted she had already ‘choped’ the space and even threatened to involve the police.

The Growing Frustration

Such incidents are becoming all too common in Singapore. Many drivers are left feeling frustrated as they navigate this ‘choping’ culture, which is essentially queue-jumping in the parking world.

Proposed Solutions

So, how can we tackle this issue? One potential solution is to implement a system where drivers can only reserve a parking spot if they are willing to pay for it. This way, those genuinely searching for a spot won’t have to compete with others who are simply trying to ‘chope’ a space.
